Protecting Guido and Luigi! Posted by raptor1982 on Monday, December 17 2007
Protective fences have finally been installed around the Luigi and Guido photo location outside of Cars Race Rally.
The photo location is part of the Toon Studio project to enhance the theming of the area. But it became so popular that guests started climbing the vehicles and so involuntary damaging these unique props. A temporary barrier was setup before without any result.
New signs at Cars Race Rally Posted by raptor1982 on Saturday, September 1 2007
Imagineers have just recently installed the famous Route 66 sign at Cars Race Rally. The sign was always present on numorous concept arts for the attraction, but didn't seem to have made it of the drawing board, up until our photographer visited the park today.
Another sign has been installed as well at the Luigi & Guido photo location, announcing the sale of "Lightyear tires".
Cars Race Rally fun facts Posted by raptor1982 on Wednesday, June 13 2007
» This is first Disney park attraction based on the Disney•Pixar film, Cars.
» Guests will first see Luigi & Guido in front of the attraction. This is the first time these characters have been created in three-dimensions in a Disney Park.
» The Piston Cup will be on display in the middle of the rotunda, as guests enter. It is 25” high and 20” wide and gold plated.
» Guest will be immersed in Radiator Springs, created with dimensional movie sets that replicate the store fronts, shops, and neon signs of the little town off Route 66. They will see Flo’s V-8 Cafe, Luigi’s Casa Della Tires, and Ramone’s House of Body Art.
» There are 12 ride vehicles (some red, some blue and some aqua), whose design is inspired by the automobiles in Cars. The vehicles represent a new character created specifically for this attraction with the help of the Disney•Pixar – Cars design team.
» It took one year to design, sculpt and produce the Cars Race Rally ride vehicles.
» The setting of the attraction is Radiator Springs, just after the end of the film, Cars.
» A visitor’s center, sponsored by the Radiator Springs Chamber of Commerce has been set up to welcome travelers to Lightning McQueen’s Racing Headquarters and to show off the businesses and leading citizens of the town.
» In English, Mater, the tow truck, says his name is “Mater, like ta-mater without the “ta”. In French, since his joke would not translate, he says his name is “Martin. Like Aston Martin without the Aston.
» The music played during the Cars Quatre Roues Rallye is from two songs by Randy Newman featured in the film Cars – “Best Backward Driver” and “Doc Racing.” The songs were newly orchestrated for the ride by Jonathan Sacks.
» Clips from over 15 songs associated with cars, traveling or road adventures are played in the queue area for the attraction, including three that were featured in the film Cars – “Real Gone” sung by Sheryl Crow, “Life Is A Highway” performed by Rascal Flatts, and “Route 66” sung by Chuck Berry.
» Cars won the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Film and was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film for the 2007 Academy Awards®. Randy Newman’s song “Our Town” was nominated for an Oscar® for Original Song and won the 2007 Grammy® Award for Best Song.

Show writing and design for Route 66 Posted by Anthony on Wednesday, May 16 2007
Michael Sprout, Senior Show Writer, confirms what raptor1982/wdsfans have reported before that the queue buildings are set up like a "visitor centre" for Radiator Springs, showcasing each of the stores. He also mentions "wild race music" and that Lightning and Mater will be positioned at the edge of the race area (rather than outside the entrance as expected before) shouting encouragements to guests on the spinning ride.
The second half of the video features graphic designer Debbie Hofman speaking briefly about how the Imagineers attempted to capture the feel of Route 66 for Europeans and "show what it means for Americans", whilst a camera pans across a never-before-seen concept model depicting the full visitor centre complex from behind, the walls decorated in large posters featuring local brands such as Lightning McQueen's Rust-eze medicated bumper ointment!

Theming Radiator Springs Posted by raptor1982 on Tuesday, April 10 2007
We reported earlier about the new backdrop that was installed high above the attraction. However, more details are being installed as well, like the old fashioned electric poles and the neon signs on the actual queue buildings.
We also have some more details regarding the theming inside the queue line.
Upon entering the attraction, a large Piston Cup will be put in place with the queue line going around it. Each store front will also have lots of references to the movie, like posters for Ramone's Body Art shop, props from Fillmore's Organic Fuel and even the articles from Doc Hudson's workshop will go up somewhere in the queue line.
"Christmas" lights have been put up in the mean time on the Tires Tower in front of Casa della Tires shop, giving Radiator Springs the look and feel as can be seen near the end of the movie when Lightning McQueen brings the town back to life. Ironically it seems that the Imagineers are doing exactly the same thing for the once so dormant Walt Disney Park and turning it into a place filled with life and colour.
Cadillac Range for Cars Race Rally (UPDATED) Posted by Anthony on Sunday, April 8 2007
Our wdsfans.com host, raptor1982, reports from Walt Disney Studios Park today that the huge backdrop of Cadillac Range has now been added to Cars Race Rally. The large steel frame, attached to the Art of Disney Animation building, has been in place for over a week, and now the attraction has finally received its classic Route 66-styled backdrop with a blue sky and ochre rocks.
The backdrop will be important not just for giving the attraction a better sense of place, but also for matching the nearby Crush's Coaster and Flying Carpets Over Agrabah. The backdrop is very similar to the curved wall around Flying Carpets, whilst the EAC mural on Crush's Coaster completes the trio of classic movie-set backdrops for their animated productions.

Cars revealed! Posted by raptor1982 on Wednesday, February 21 2007
The vehicles for Cars Race Rally have arrived and have been installed on the turntables.
FRANK, member of our own magicforum, has posted a whole bunch of great photos that reveal the cars in 3 variations: blue, green and red.
The vehicles have been sculpted under the watching eye of Imagineering at Zamperla, the Italian manufacturer of the ride system.
More great photos can be found in Frank's post on the magicforum.

Cars Race Rally: photo update [correction] Posted by raptor1982 on Wednesday, January 3 2007
Photo update for the Cars Race Rally attraction.
Notice that the first layers of asphalt for the mock up highway have been laid. This "road" will split the Radiator Springs area from Crush's Coaster.
Correction: we've been informed that the black "road" is in fact an enormous planter!

Canyon grows, publicity revs up Posted by Anthony on Monday, November 27 2006
Every light is on green for Cars Race Rally right now. At the construction site, the ochre canyon wall we reported exactly a week ago has progressed further, with more colour now added.
An even more noticable change, aside from the tarps now covering the ride foundations, is sure to be the huge concrete and metal foundation of the attraction's largest canyon rock. Similar to the rock featured heavily in the film (and on it's poster), this will eventually be an iconic piece of themeing for the attraction. For now, though, it's a concrete cross section and a large metal framework - a framework which appears to already reach over 12ft high!
With so much work still to do at the construction site, it's good to see that Disneyland Resort Paris has already placed a few important seeds of publicity. For once not missing a good opportunity, they've included an insert in the UK edition of the Cars DVD itself, advertising the attraction, the anniversary and the Kids Free offer.

The desert before the Cars Posted by Anthony on Monday, November 20 2006
There has been a remarkable touch of progress at Cars Race Rally this week. Despite the ride system, vehicles and general attraction area still being a long way from ready, the first real signs of desert themeing have already arrived.
The brick wall we reported being built back in October was later given an extra layer of wire mesh and themed to a sandy desert rockface in a similar way to the rocks at Crush's Coaster. Now, before the ride itself or any real infrastructure (paths, etc.) arrives, the sandy canyon-side has been given a quick blast of warm ochre red paint.
Grandmath from Disney Central Plaza forum presents the first photos, which show not only how this red colour scheme bounces well off the blue of Crush, but also a large new block of formed concrete next to the attraction. The purpose of this is currently unknown and it does not appear on any plans. Therefore, it is likely to also be a part of the themeing work, perhaps as the base foundation for the further, much higher, canyon hills to be placed on this spot.
Finally, it's interesting to note that the recently installed arabian-style lampposts around the new Flying Carpets Over Agrabah oasis have been packaged up in a protective plastic coat, suggesting that the construction fences around this area won't be receding anytime soon.
A brick wall at Cars Posted by Anthony on Sunday, October 22 2006
It may not sound very exciting, but honestly it is - a new brick wall has begun construction at the site of Cars Race Rally! You can pick your jaw up off the ground now.
We confirmed a few weeks ago that the two pairs of turntables which make up the ride will be placed around 1 metre below ground level, with raised scenery and themeing around them to give the full effect of a canyon setting. Whilst the queue buildings of the attraction have continued to grow, the attraction area itself has remained a pair of deep concrete foundations. Now though, the first signs of themeing and customisation can be seen, since this wall will likely be used as some kind of retaining wall for the land and planting around the ride.
The queue buildings are also starting to give us clues as to their themeing, the most visible being the three angled metal supports seen in the photo below. They may not look like much, but these will soon be joined by a canopy and much more themeing, to form the two "boarding pens" of the ride and... Flo's V8 Café!
Recreating Radiator Springs Posted by Anthony on Thursday, October 5 2006
The lonely queue buildings of Cars Race Rally have now progressed quickly, already adding more features and varied architecture styles to the Studios. So far, they look similar to most concept art, with a circular central building and a long, thin, offshoot for the double-back queue. A large canopied building based on Flo's V8 Café (the gas station in the movie) is also on plans, as a themed location for the attraction's boarding pens.
In the future "canyon", the foundations for the two pairs of turntables which make up the Cars ride have visibly progressed much further, with thick concrete walls and dividers lining the surprisingly deep pits.
In more Cars-related news, it has been confirmed that the French attraction title, Cars Quatre Roues Rallye (roughly translated: Four Wheel Rally), will be the final in-park name. Earlier this year we welcomed Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast, rather than the French-advertised Buzz l'Éclair Bataille Laser, to Disneyland Park, and so this choice of a French title is likely to balance out languages in the new Toon Studio.
Cars races ahead; New details confirmed Posted by Anthony on Monday, September 25 2006
One attraction already benefitting from the Toon Studio project is surely Flying Carpets Over Agrabah, since a quick flight through the Genie's film set gives the only clear view of the far side of the expansion land, where the queue buildings for Cars Race Rally have recently risen at racecar speed.
Taking their designs from various memorable Radiator Springs establishments, the buildings will also apparently be soaked in a plethora of neon lights as they lead through to the race area in the "canyon", 1 metre below ground level. The ride itself remains a series of concrete foundations, but the ride and its vehicles are confirmed to be under construction in Italy as we speak. The attraction will therefore be different to Francis' Lady Bug Boogie at Disney's California Adventure, which is currently experiencing some serious technical problems. In addition to featuring twice as many vehicles, Cars Race Rally will also apparently be twice as fast as the Californian attraction.
Though not featuring Lightning McQueen, Doc Hudson or any of the other key Cars characters, the vehicles will certainly feature everything to suggest they are from the Cars universe (such as eyes, mouths, and so on). The use of more "generic" vehicles is likely to ensure they are all equal, with no need for guests to fight over their favourite characters. This also allows Lightning McQueen and Mater to instead be featured at the side of the Race Rally, cheering on guests and "posing" for pictures. European characters Guido and Luigi will also be featured near the attraction, posing for pictures at a meet 'n' greet location outside their shop.
Cars Race Rally puts pedal to the metal! Posted by Anthony on Wednesday, July 12 2006
Whilst the construction site of Crush's Coaster has sped ahead with a fully completed coaster track, half complete dark-ride track and huge concrete or steel frame walls on every side, the site of Cars Race Rally has remained an empty patch of dirt for many months.
All that has changed in the last 24 hours, however, as member "Zurg" on Disney Central Plaza forum brings new construction photos showing the start of foundations for the ride. A giant rectangular pit has been dug out in the exact location of the tea cups-style ride's two turntables.
Cars without Cars characters? Posted by raptor1982 on Monday, July 10 2006
Some news about Cars Race Rally: word reached us that the vehicles which the visitors will board, won't be the characters from the movie. Since the characters from Cars are supposed to be "humans", it wouldn't make sense, according to the managment, that people would sit in them.
On the other hand, Lightning McQueen and Mater are supposed to stand along the attraction to encourge the visitors during their Race Rally.
